One of the most common questions we are asked here at Wessex Packaging is…Do I need single wall or double wall boxes?
This is a great question, as when it comes to protecting products and transporting them, it’s important to know what single or double wall boxes are, and when to use them.
The choice of what type of box should consider the size and weight of the product, and the purpose of the box i.e storing, posting, shipping, transporting, stacking etc.
The structure of a single wall cardboard box consists of three layers: the outer liner, the fluting and the inner layer. Although these types of boxes are less dense when compared to double wall boxes, they still provide a suitable protection for a vast variety of products.
When it comes to price, single wall boxes are generally more cost effective than double wall boxes due to the reduction in material. This makes this type of box an ideal choice for an individual looking to cut down on their packaging costs for their lighter products.
Furthermore, due to their light properties, single wall boxes prove to be more cost effective for shipping purposes.
The structure of a double wall box is made up of two corrugated layers of cardboard. Unlike the single wall cardboard boxes, the double wall boxes have five layers instead of three. These layers include: the outer liner, the outer fluting, the centre liner, the inner fluting and the inner liner. With these added layers, the strength of the box is stronger and heavy-duty, making it significantly less likely to crumple under large mass.
Due to their higher-grade protection, double wall boxes are the ideal choice for packaging fragile and heavy duty items. They are also able to handle more rugged treatment and also have extra cushioning properties.
With the added strength of double wall boxes, they are much safer to stack on top of each other and can minimise the risk of the contents inside being damaged during transit.
Double wall boxes are optimal for the transportation of glassware, electronics, ceramics and other fragile or heavy items. They are also perfect for long-distance travel or when goods should be stored for long periods of time.
Factors to consider when choosing the right box:
Weight/Fragility: If you’re planning on shipping items that are heavy or delicate, it’s better to use double wall cardboard boxes to ensure better protection.
Budget: If you’re thinking about reducing your packaging costs and are shipping items that are rather light and don’t break easily, single wall boxes are the optimal solution.
Shipping distance: When planning on sending items that are going to be in transit for a long time. Double wall boxes have the properties that make them more durable for extended periods of travelling.
Environmental impact: Corrugated cardboard boxes are an eco-friendly packaging option because they are fully, kerbside recyclable. Furthermore, a large proportion of the materials used are recycled.
